I love Zevon’s lyrics for their intelligence, literacy, tenderness and dark wit. These things are only enhanced by the fact that most of his stronger pieces (and there are many competing for that rank) feature interesting characters and and a compelling storyline. They often sweep you through geography, history and intimate events, all in just a few verses and choruses.

The Rock Stars Next Door
Travel back in time with me to 1972. I’m a seven-year-old girl in Marin County, California. My family is newly settled in the States after a long stint of living in Vietnam. We’re living in a beautiful house, but there’s a growing tension in the air. Our next door neighbors are rock stars. And I’m being gently led toward one of life’s harder truths by one of them.
Sex on the Beach
This is a new story I’ve been wanting to take out for a spin. It is part of a set of three stories that I’m working on that are all loosely connected around the theme of “public sex.” I guess you could say I’m spreading my, er, wings. I performed this at Tell It: Brooklyn.
