Some of us are more awkward than others. I told this tale of paralyzing social phobia and the search for friendship at college at the Hartford, CT storytelling show “Speak Up” over the weekend. There was an unintended consequence, but a happy one, as a result.

Travel back in time with me to 1972. I’m a seven-year-old girl in Marin County, California. My family is newly settled in the States after a long stint of living in Vietnam.
